Reading these days is not easy because we are constantly distracted by endless stimuli. That is why I treat reading as a form of meditation.
I do not follow strict rules when choosing books. Often it is intuitive. Sometimes an author’s name simply comes to mind and I search for their work.
I also prefer physical books over digital ones. Reading, to me, is a multisensory experience. I love the smell of paper, the texture of the pages, and the chance to underline or mark sentences that resonate with me.
Here are five books that shaped my perspective. I hope they will do the same for you.
1. Bhagavad Gita
Traditionally attributed to the sage Vyasa, the Bhagavad Gita is part of the Indian epic Mahabharata. It takes the form of a dialogue between Prince Arjuna and Krishna. Many consider it one of the world’s most important texts on yoga philosophy and spiritual wisdom.
2. The Tibetan Book of the Dead (Bardo Thodol)
This Tibetan Buddhist text was revealed by the terton Karma Lingpa in the 14th century and is traditionally attributed to Padmasambhava. It describes the “bardo,” the intermediate state between death and rebirth, and offers guidance for attaining liberation.
3. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
This novel, written in 1988 by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho, is one of the best-selling books of all time. It tells the story of Santiago, a shepherd boy who follows his dream of finding treasure, only to discover deeper truths about destiny and purpose.
4. A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle
Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth: Awakening to Your Life’s Purpose expands on themes from his earlier work The Power of Now. It explains how ego-driven thinking creates suffering and how awakening to consciousness can transform both individuals and humanity.
5. The Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles
Published in 1910, this book is a cornerstone of the New Thought movement. Wallace D. Wattles argues that wealth comes not only from hard work or luck but from thinking and acting in a “certain way” that aligns with the creative power of the universe.
Each of these books gave me not only knowledge but also a new lens to see life through. If you are looking for both spiritual and practical growth, I hope at least one of them will speak to you.
